Vienna-based companies planning a larger digitalisation project in 2026 may be able to receive substantial financial support. The Digitalisation funding programme of the Vienna Business Agency provides funding of up to 50% of eligible project costs for suitable projects.
The minimum project volume is €10,000, while the maximum grant is €50,000 per project. This can make the programme particularly relevant for SMEs that are planning a broader digital transformation rather than a single isolated measure.
The funding is awarded by the Vienna Business Agency. The Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (WKO) also provides information about the programme, but does not make the funding decision. A complete application must be submitted before the project starts.

The programme is therefore not an automatic reimbursement scheme. Projects are reviewed and assessed competitively. The actual grant amount depends on which project costs are accepted and on the final funding decision.
Who can apply for digitalisation funding in Vienna?
The programme is aimed at established small and medium-sized enterprises in Vienna. Among other requirements, applicants must have maintained a business establishment in Vienna for at least one year when the application is submitted.
The programme is generally open across industries. However, whether a specific project is eligible depends on the project concept, digitalisation plan, planned costs and the assessment by the Vienna Business Agency.
How much funding is available?
The maximum funding rate is 50% of eligible project costs. The word “eligible” is important: not every invoice or budget item is automatically accepted.
Illustrative examples:
- €10,000 eligible project costs → up to €5,000 funding
- €20,000 eligible project costs → up to €10,000 funding
- €50,000 eligible project costs → up to €25,000 funding
- €100,000 eligible project costs → up to €50,000 funding
The grant itself is capped at €50,000. Higher project costs therefore do not increase the maximum funding beyond that amount.
Which costs can be eligible in a digitalisation project?
Eligible costs can include expenses that are directly connected to the development and implementation of a new digital solution. Depending on the specific project, this may include:
- development and implementation of digital solutions
- external consulting services connected to implementation
- training and qualification measures related to the new solution
- project-related software and licences
- necessary hardware and digital communication equipment
- interfaces between existing and new systems
- automation of workflows and customer processes
Each cost item must be directly attributable to the digitalisation project. Ordinary operating costs, internal personnel costs, standard hardware, standard software and pure replacement investments are typical examples of costs that may be excluded.
Can a new website or webshop be funded?
This is one of the most important points: the Vienna Business Agency explicitly lists website creation or renewal and webshops as standalone measures as not eligible.
A new website with a budget of €10,000 is therefore not automatically eligible simply because it reaches the minimum project volume. The same applies to an isolated webshop project.
The situation can be different when a website, webshop or customer portal forms a meaningful part of a broader coherent digitalisation project. Examples could include digital customer processes, system integrations, automated workflows, customer portals, ERP or inventory interfaces and digital support processes.

What does a coherent digitalisation project mean?
The programme expects a clear and understandable digitalisation plan. It is not enough to bundle unrelated services into one quotation merely to reach the minimum project size.
A stronger approach is to define one overall business objective and combine technically related measures that support this objective. For example, a company may digitalise the entire process from initial customer enquiry to internal processing and automated communication.
Example 1: Digital customer process
A business modernises its complete enquiry process. The project could include a new digital customer interface, structured enquiry forms, a customer area, automated email processes, an internal workflow and interfaces to existing systems.
Example 2: E-commerce and inventory integration
Instead of creating only a new webshop, the company digitalises the entire sales process. Product data, inventory levels, orders, payments, shipping status and internal processing are connected through interfaces and partly automated.
Example 3: Automation of internal workflows

These examples are for illustration only. The Vienna Business Agency decides whether a specific project and its individual cost items are eligible.
Can project costs be distributed freely between different services?
Not arbitrarily. A coherent digitalisation project can contain several different eligible cost categories and external services, but each item needs to be logically connected to the overall project and directly attributable to the digitalisation objective.
Artificially combining unrelated services would therefore not be the right approach. Instead, the application should clearly describe which business problem is being solved, which systems and processes are affected and how the individual components work together.
Why applying before project start is critical
The programme requires the full funding application to be submitted before the project begins. Eligible expenditure must arise after submission and after the permitted project start.
Starting the project too early or entering binding commitments beforehand can therefore put eligibility at risk. Funding requirements should ideally be considered during the project planning stage rather than after implementation has already started.

Applications can be submitted on an ongoing basis. Complete applications are processed together at the relevant cut-off date and then assessed competitively.

According to the Vienna Business Agency, the application may require documents including:
- the completed funding application
- application confirmation
- De-minimis declaration
- latest annual financial statements or income-expenditure statement
- quotations for cost items above €10,000 net
